It's been go go go for our VCAL students

Year 11 VCAL

As the term draws to an end, it is great to see so many VCAL projects being undertaken or completed. Our year 11 VCAL wood class have built a wonderful decking area at the front of the College for students to use while waiting for their buses. The project was another great success, with students planning from early in the year by submitting a proposal to Mr Di Muzio, seeking quotes from local businesses and then building it.

Congratulations to Ms Campbell and her year 11 VCAL class who raised $1300 for the Cancer Council with their Biggest Morning Tea in the staffroom. It was wonderful to see such hard work (baking mainly) and commitment from the students to make this event possible. Thank you to the staff that attended and enjoyed all the goodies on offer.

All year levels are working on the St Vincent de Paul winter and blanket appeals. With help from community volunteers, they have been busy knitting squares to make blankets. The Kilmore Men’s Shed has been helping the students make fantastic wooden toys. Other events are raising funds for sleeping bags and food vouchers for Vinnies. If anyone has some warm winter clothing or blankets to donate, please leave in bags at reception and we will make sure it is passed on to those in need.

As part of this appeal, the VET events team have organised a sleep out at the Gonz, our version of the Sleep out at the G. As part of this, the Year 11 VCAL food class have been preparing soup and bread to feed the hungry hordes that will participate.

Our VCAL year 11s have been doing structured work placement. Using the information and skills they have developed in their work related skills class, students had to organise their own work by approaching a potential employer and completing the necessary paperwork. We see the students at work this week in all kinds of jobs. I thank local businesses for their support.

Year 12 VCAL

Year 12 VCAL students recently attended a leadership and teamwork day at Kyneton. They took part in numerous activities including a low-ropes course, an orienteering course and teamwork and initiative games. Even though they froze, they had a great day and achieved much.

The year 12 numeracy class held their annual Mother’s Day morning tea in the Marhles Centre. It was good to see so many people and generations celebrating the special place that mothers and grandmothers hold in our hearts. Congratulations again to our year 12s for successfully catering and organising such a special event.

Finally, this will be my last bulletin article as VCAL coordinator. Next semester I will become learning area coordinator for technology, though I will still be involved in VCAL as a teacher. I thank the VCAL team for their support during the last six months. So a big thank you to Helen Campbell, Helen Perez, Jenny Pendlebury, Jess Flavell, Meg Bryar, Jason Gilchrist, Shona Maskleyne, Anna Liggieri and Tonya Frost for your help and support. I congratulate Jess Flavell and Jenny Pendlebury who will share the role of VCAL coordinator.
