Our VET Events team ran and coordinated another successful Assumption Winter Sleep Out, to raise funds for the homeless of Melbourne, last Friday. The night started at 6pm with students from all year levels rolling up and preparing to sacrifice their warm beds to sleep rough for a night.
After some bonding activities run by event students as well as Mr Coonan and Mr Caruso who helped out with dodge ball it was over to the Marlhes for soup and bread rolls. We thank Julie from the catering hub for preparing this meal.
Back in the Gonz we watched a video about homelessness presented by Br Doug Walsh from Vinnies followed by a talk on the issue from Cassie and Daniel from the Marist Youth Ministry. I was impressed by our students who were attentive for the 45 minute presentation and responded with some thoughtful questions.
Then it was time for some fun where teams dressed one member in garbage bags and toilet roll paper for a fashion parade extravaganza. Congratulations to Mrs Fisher and Mr Egan for their competitiveness in entering the parade.
The night finished with students watching Finding Dory and then trying to sleep. In the morning a few bleary-eyed participants enjoyed toast and juice.
I thank the teachers who helped out during the evening and overnight and those who came in the morning to help pack and clean up.
The events team and I aimed to raise $3000 dollars from the sleep out and I’m proud we raised $3049 to give to Br Doug and the homeless. I thank all those involved in the event for their generosity.
