Action at the VEIS Grand Final

11 August 2016

Congratulations to Anna Gurnett and Laura Newnham who qualified to compete at the Nationals in Sydney in September. They qualified because of their excellent result at the Victorian Equestrian Interschool Series Grand Final on August 6 and 7. A special commendation goes to Georgia Barbic who was awarded a medal of excellence for her participation, dedication and involvement in this event.

The day started and ended smoothly. My ride wasn’t until 2 o’clock so I didn’t rush. When we arrived at Werribee Centre we met up with fellow members of the ACK equestrian team and did our allocated jobs.

I recorded my first ever first on Baci! I was seventh in my other test but was so proud because by the end of the day I sat sixth in the VEIS Series for 2016 in the Intermediate Preliminary Dressage division.

I competed in the Medium Dressage at the VEIS Grand Final. My first test needed a few improvements. My second test was my best test to date. With my scores 65%- 68% I finished with a third and a first. I won Champion overall and achieved fourth in the 2016 VEIS series for Medium Dressage. This was a great and unexpected outcome. I have been battling a few injuries and this was my first competition after four months. I was very proud.

I also competed in the Victorian Equestrian Interschool Series Championships with my horse Erin aka Scarred for Life. We entered the intermediate section of the show jumping. With team member Georgia Barbic supporting me I rode into the ring after a good warm up.

Sadly, in the ring we did not get the results we were after although I was more than happy that we got around safely. A challenge I faced in the week beforehand was managing my time between school work and riding, therefore, Erin did not have the amount of work under her belt to perform to the best of her ability.

The following two rounds were not ideal either but I was challenged as a rider by her behaviour.

I took away from the competition more drive and determination to do better at the next competition.  All in all, I enjoyed my day even though I did not get the results I was after. I congratulate everyone who rode at the weekend for ACK.
