Hi! I'm Haylea Wright. Reid Collier and I (pictured) are the La Valla House Captains for 2017. Because of the year 12 exams Reid and I stepped into our new positions early to relieve this year's leaders Georgie and Nick. I have been an Assumption student since year 7 and am honoured to be given this role.
With Christmas quickly approaching it's time to dig deep and support those who may struggle at this time of the year. The Vinnies' Christmas Appeal allows us to give to those in the local area who aren’t as fortunate as we are. La Valla members have been asked by our VCAL team to donate goods such us tinned food and or Christmas goodies (puddings or biscuits). So far La Valla has done a great job, bringing in plenty of tins and other goodies, along with donations. As an incentive, if all houses work together and bring in enough items, students have been promised a true colours day on November 21. On this day students can wear their favourite sports teams top with their PE pants and make a $2 donation to the Christmas appeal.
Over the past week and a half La Valla has been running bingo. La Valla students were given a bingo sheet which had 30 questions to answer and activities to complete. To win students had to complete one full row across and a column down, the first person to do this received a $20 ref voucher, the next five people to do this received a $10 ref voucher and anyone else who could complete the whole sheet received a $50 voucher.
Next year Assumption will have a new pastoral care system where a selection of students from all year levels will be in homerooms. This is something new for everyone and will, hopefully, help older and younger students to mix.
On November 9, Mr Hamilton and the student leadership team trialled a lunchtime activity for the year 7s: house v house. A round robin of three short basketball games. La Valla placed third out of eight teams. Congratulations to those who played and to those who came along to support their friends. We hope to fit in a lunchtime for year 8s to play a dodgeball round robin before the end of the year. We would like to make such activities a weekly thing in 2017.
Finally, the swimming carnival is on Thursday, December 1 which is compulsory for year 7 to 9 students. Year 10-12s are encouraged to come even though their school year is over. Sign-ups will begin next week and all junior students must sign up for at least one event: the more the better.
