From the Careers Desk

20 July 2017

The pathways team is busy in term 3 with every student involved in subject or course selection. Please don’t think that we need to see every student, but we can answer questions via email, or meet students and parents to help with the online selection process.

Year 12 students

Selection is available from August 7 to September 28. I will hold an information session for students on Friday, August 4 about how to apply for courses, special entry access schemes and scholarships.

Year 9–11 students

Selection is available from August 28 to September 15. We will run assemblies and information classes before the opening of the portals. More information will be available soon about subject choices.

Tertiary open days

If you are considering studying at TAFE or university, it is crucial that you attend open days. Students from year 9 can certainly attend these.

Throughout the year vocational and tertiary institutions open their doors to the public and showcase their courses, accommodation, scholarships, pathway courses, student services and their "point of difference".

At open days, you can do the following:

  • Get a feel for the campus culture.
  • Learn about courses and career options.
  • Undertake campus and accommodation tours led by current students.
  • Speak to students and lecturers about courses or careers.
  • Compare courses at different institutions
  • Learn about student sports you can play and societies you can join.
  • Receive course counselling and guidance.
  • Attend information sessions and workshops.
  • Watch live demonstrations.
  • Listen to bands, eat lots of food, participate in activities and have fun.

Don’t just pick a course without visiting the campus. Potentially you will be spending several years studying there and paying tens of thousands of dollars for your course and accommodation. It’s worth making the effort. A list of open day dates and times is on  the Career website. You'll also find a list of questions you may wish to use at open days.

Lunchtime information sessions

There'll be information sessions this term about different careers and courses. The first was held today and covered careers in sport and nursing and midwifery. More will be held later in the term.

On Monday, August 14, Sara Reagan from La Trobe University will be in the career hub to meet  students and parents wanting to discuss courses. She'll be happy to discuss and read any year 12 student's Aspire application too.

Career newsletters

All year 10 to 12 students are sent a more in-depth newsletter once a fortnight. Parents and other students can also access these on the Career website.
