Year 7 Austin House student Hayley Azzopardi achieved state honours at the recent Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Victorian Championships held in Geelong on Sunday, 4 November.
Competing with Jets Gymnstics from Gisborne, where she has been a member for 11 years, 13 year old Hayley came first on beam in level 6 and is the 2018 Victorian Champion (level 6 beam).
Her team also took out the Victorian Champion title on beam (level 6) and bars (level 6) and finished second all round on the day.
Hayley thoroughly enjoyed competing at such a high level.
“Competing at state level is very challenging as the competition is of a very high standard. You are competing against the best girls in the state and these girls can train double the hours I do,” Hayley said.
“What I love about gymnastics is pushing myself beyond my limits, working as a team and achieving new skills. My favorite apparatus is the beam as it is what I am best at. I currently train four days a week, 16 hours in total.”
Hayley is working hard towards her dream of reaching level 10 in the sport she loves and has plenty of people to thank for helping her along the way.
“I would like to thank my coach for getting me to where I am now and would like to also thank my mum for always taking me to my ongoing training sessions and competitions all over the state. My mum is truly my number one fan and supporter.
Mum Trish Stuart would not have it any other way.
“Watching Hayley compete at this high level and doing well makes all the effort, driving and time worthwhile. For the past two years Hayley has battled with foot/ankle injuries so I was tremendously proud when she was awarded first place and named Victorian Champion on beam. Hayley is a beautiful gymnast to watch and it was wonderful for her to finally have this ultimate success,” Trish said.
