YEAR 7 NEWS

In very exciting news, the year 7 English classes have all completed their Library Orientation session. By the end of this Orientation, every year 7 student had also completed a Book Tasting activity and used this to choose a book to read for the first few weeks of this term.

Each year 7 English class has a regular fortnightly visit to the Library and for each visit they complete an activity and spend some time reading. Over the next few weeks, our year 7s will be learning more about our Library Homepage and all the resources they can access there. They will also explore our eLibrary which is called Over Drive.

In further pleasing news, this year’s cohort has also broken our record for year 7 borrowing. Well done, year 7!

SHOULD WE JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER?

Many of our White myMAP English classes have been into the Library for a session about different genres, and exploring what book covers can tell us about the themes of a book.

We discovered some covers give very clear indications about themes – fighter planes and poppies on books usually indicate War Stories, for instance. We also found some great examples, like Meg Rosoff’s How I Live Now, that give no real clues at all about the theme!

So… should we judge a book by its cover?

We concluded that book covers mostly do what they are supposed to do – they encourage us to pick up the book and investigate the book further… if the cover appeals.

BOOK CLUB

In a reunion of old friends and a greeting of new members,Book Club got off to a racing start for the year.

Mrs Reid and Mrs Devlin asked questions about how students had spent their holidays and naturally the conversation drifted towards what had been read over summer!

A sweet treat was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Mrs Reid and Mrs Devlin for organising this event.

We are all looking forward to the next meeting later this term – and it is not too late to join!

Please email library@assumption.vic.edu.au if you would like to sign up.

Happy reading!

Director of Library and Information Services
